Polish defense during the September 1939 campaign
Overview
The September 1939 campaign involved multi-front Polish resistance against German forces at the onset of World War II.
In the defense of Westerplatte, approximately 200 Polish soldiers led by Major Henryk Sucharski and Captain Franciszek Dąbrowski held the Military Transit Depot for seven days despite intense shelling from the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein and subsequent land, sea, and air attacks. Although located in the Free City of Danzig, the garrison had been bolstered with heavy weaponry, including mortars and Bofors anti-tank guns.
Simultaneously, Polish forces engaged in maritime and land-based resistance. On the maritime front, the Polish Navy defended Hel against Luftwaffe bombings and German destroyers, with crews from vessels such as the ORP Gryf and ORP Wicher continuing to resist despite heavy damage. On land, Polish cavalry units attempted to impede the advance of German armored divisions following the invasion and the bombardment of Wielun.
