Polish education law and school year updates

Overview

In May 2026, Poland adopted an amendment to the Education Law, which was published in the official journal (Dz.U. poz. 904) and set to take effect on September 1, 2026. Following this legislative change, the Polish Ministry of National Education (MEN) released the official calendar for the 2026/2027 school year. Classes are scheduled to begin on September 1, 2026, and conclude on June 25, 2027. The upcoming academic year will involve the implementation of reformed curricula for certain primary school classes, focusing on educational projects and practical activities. Specific scheduling details for the 2026/2027 year include a winter holiday break from December 23 to December 31, 2026, and a spring break from March 25 to March 30, 2027. Additionally, winter holidays will be divided into three shifts across different provinces, occurring between January 18 and February 28, 2027. Summer vacation is scheduled to run from June 26 through August 31, 2027. As the start of the school year approaches, the Ministry has confirmed that religion and ethics classes will remain at one hour per week, scheduled around mandatory lessons to assist school management. This decision follows protests from the Polish Episcopate Conference, which had advocated for two hours of weekly instruction and a mandatory choice between the two subjects. Regarding educational resources, public primary school students will continue to receive free textbooks. However, new sets will primarily be provided to grades I, IV, and VII due to a three-year replacement cycle and the implementation of new core curricula for grades I and IV; students in other grades will use previously purchased materials. As of late August 2026, the MEN has issued new regulations regarding teacher qualifications.
