Polish forest management and conservation policy

In Poland, tensions have emerged regarding the Ministry of Climate and Environment’s plans to increase the protection of valuable forest areas. Former Deputy Minister of the Environment Paweł Sałek warned that these policies, which include establishing new nature reserves and old-growth forest protections, could result in an annual loss of approximately one billion PLN for the State Forests. Critics argue these administrative decisions may disrupt timber harvesting, forest renewal, and the domestic wood industry.

Following these policy shifts, specific developments have occurred in the Silesian Voivodeship. New nature reserves, such as Bogdaniec and Psi Nos, have been established, increasing the region’s total protected areas to 70. Additionally, a proposal for the management of approximately 5,300 hectares of forest land near Bielsko-Biała has been submitted for public consultation. This proposal includes scenarios for either the total exclusion of land from timber harvesting to prioritize natural processes or a transition to “nature-close forestry” to reduce large-scale clear-cutting.
