Following the death of General Mirosław Różański on August 24, Polish President Karol Nawrocki scheduled a Senate by-election for the Lubuskie Voivodeship. The vote is set for November 22 in electoral district No. 20, covering the counties of Krosno, Świebodzin, and Zielona Góra. Zdzisława Różańska, the widow of the late senator, has been selected as the joint candidate for the democratic camp under a coalition agreement called the ‘Senate Pact’. The process of collecting signatures for her candidacy under the ‘Coalition of October 15 Voters’ has commenced. In response to the ruling coalition’s selection of Różańska, response, opposition parties PiS and Konfederacja have announced they will not field separate candidates. Instead, they have pledged support to Janusz Kubicki, the former president of Zielona Góra, who is running on a PiS list despite declaring his independence. Konfederacja representatives cited dissatisfaction with the local administration—specifically regarding city debt and the closure of maternity wards—stating that supporting Kubicki is a necessary step to ‘break the political monopoly of the Platforma party’. The National Electoral Commission has officially registered 12 electoral committees for the upcoming by-election. Of these, seven were established by political parties and five by voter groups. Committees have until October 14 to nominate candidates, each of whom must secure the support of at least 2,000 voters.
