The Zondacrypto investigation has escalated into a major political and legal crisis in Poland. Przemysław Kral, the former head of the exchange, is being pursued as a ‘small crown witness’ following allegations that the platform diverted investor funds, resulting in estimated losses of at least 2.4 billion PLN and affecting over 1,000 victims. The exchange’s Estonian-based operator, BB Trade Estonia OÜ, was declared insolvent by a Tallinn court on August 27, 2026. As Kral begins cooperating with prosecutors, the scandal has expanded into allegations of high-level political corruption. Kral has claimed that a foundation linked to former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro received 500,000 PLN in exchange for promised legal protection. Other political figures, including Michał Moskal, Przemysław Wipler, and Tomasz Sakiewicz, have been named in connection to Kral. Additionally, Radosław Piesiewicz, head of the Polish Olympic Committee, was recently detained on charges of providing paid protection. Recent polling indicates developments have extended the scandal into the media sector. Allegations have emerged regarding Telewizja Republika journalists, including presenter Sławomir Jastrzębowski, who reportedly participated in a WhatsApp group dedicated to managing the exchange’s image. Reports suggest staff may have engaged in social media attacks against critical reporters and that intermediaries proposed silencing journalists in exchange for advertising budgets. A police search was also conducted at the residence of a Telewizja Republika investigative journalist. Public opinion reflects significant political fallout. An IBRiS survey for Rzeczpospolita found that 53% of respondents identify Law and Justice (PiS) as the party most burdened by the scandal. Furthermore, a United Surveys poll for Wirtualna Polska reveals strong public opposition to politicians linked to the exchange running in the 2027 parliamentary elections; 68.8% of respondents believe such individuals should not be on electoral lists, a sentiment reaching 88% among supporters of the governing coalition. In response, Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek is considering forming a specialized investigative team. Meanwhile, political tension remains high as former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Jarosław Kaczyński have called for various forms of commissions to ensure accountability.
