On September 5, 2026, President Mamadi Doumbouya marked the fifth anniversary of the 2021 military ~~takeover.~~ takeover that ousted Alpha Condé. In a national address, he characterized the date as a period of “mourning, gravity, and memory,” paying tribute to the security forces involved in the transition. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Simandou 2040 vision, leveraging iron ore resources for long-term development, and asserted that efforts to combat ethnocentrism have promoted national unity. Despite these economic priorities, Doumbouya’s tenure is increasingly viewed as a shift toward consolidated rule. Although he transitioned from military leader to elected president following the December 2025 elections—winning 86.72% of the vote—the process was marked by the exclusion of major exiled opposition parties, such as the UFR and UFDG. Political and human rights concerns persist. Opposition groups and civil society, including the FNDC, criticize the administration for failing to fulfill promises regarding judicial reforms and the restoration of democratic liberties. The political climate remains characterized by the suppression of private media, bans on public demonstrations, and the loss of former political allies. Human rights reports continue to highlight approximately 30 forced disappearances and the unresolved discovery of a mass grave in the Forécariah region. On the diplomatic front, the administration has continued to engage with the international community. Recently, five new ambassadors from Greece, Slovakia, Congo, Panama, and Denmark presented their credentials to the Guinean Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen bilateral cooperation and economic transformation efforts.
