Political and social shifts in New York City

New York City has seen a significant shift in its social and political landscape following the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The city has moved from a period of increased Islamophobia and surveillance following the 2001 attacks toward greater representation of its Muslim community. This evolution is marked by the inauguration of Zohran Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, who became the first New York mayor to place his hand on a Koran during his ceremony.

Mayor Mamdani has since taken a vocal stance against federal immigration enforcement. He criticized U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, arguing they create a climate of fear and attempt to “criminalize the very fact of being an immigrant.” His comments followed Operation Rotten Apple, a Department of Homeland Security initiative that resulted in 2,197 arrests across New York State between late July and late August.

During a 9/11 memorial ceremony, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani noted a brief, non-confrontational interaction with Mamdani, stating that he told the Mayor, “I pray for you,” to avoid distractions from the victims of the attacks.
