Erika Hilton, a federal deputy for the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), has faced significant political hostility and transphobic attacks during her reelection campaign in Brazil. Earlier reports highlighted interventions by the São Paulo Electoral Court (TRE-SP) to address political violence. These included orders to halt paid promotions labeling Hilton a ‘dictator project’ and the removal of videos containing transphobic language. Additionally, a public retraction was secured from Abilio Brunini following an investigation into gender-based political violence. During the first round of the 2026 elections, the situation escalated when Hilton received a death threat via an anonymous email service. The message, sent through Onion Mail to obscure the sender, included transphobic attacks and a threat of a ‘banho de sangue’ (bloodbath). The email reportedly stated, ‘I know everything about you, I will kill you soon.’ Hilton delayed her voting to address security concerns and filed a police report with the Civil Police of São Paulo to identify the perpetrator. Despite these security incidents, Hilton was re-elected to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. According to data from the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE), she secured 1,596,472 votes, setting a historic record as the most voted woman in the institution’s history and surpassing the previous record held by Joice Hasselmann. This result represents a more than sixfold increase from her 2022 vote count. Her victory occurred alongside a broader trend in the 2026 elections, which saw a 45% increase in the number of trans and travesti candidates running for office compared to the 2022 cycle. Following the election, legal scrutiny continued as Sofia Favero (PSOL) filed The election results also highlighted a complaint polarized Congress, as conservative figures like Nikolas Ferreira and Lucas Pavanato secured massive vote counts, contrasting with Hilton’s progressive focus on the Public Ministry rights of São Paulo against state deputy-elect Eduarda Campopiano (PL). The complaint alleges transphobia women, Black populations, and gender-based political violence after Campopiano referred to Hilton as a ‘biological man’ on social media. the LGBTQIA+ community.
