Political violence and mobilization in Germany

Overview

In early September 2026, political tensions in Germany were marked by targeted attacks involving liquid substances. On September 3, nine people, including several AfD politicians, were injured in Bad Kreuznach when an unknown liquid was poured from a building onto an AfD information stand. While police have not confirmed the substance, politician Nicole Höchst claimed on social media that “concentrated chlorophenol” was used.

Two days later, on September 4, an office operated by the Identitäre Bewegung in Chemnitz was targeted by unidentified attackers who smashed windows and sprayed butyric acid into the premises. Simultaneously, the AfD and the group ‘Ein Prozent’ mobilized supporters to act as election observers across Saxony-Anhalt to monitor vote counting, citing concerns regarding potential influence from left-wing NGOs.
