Overview
France has experienced significant allergy alerts driven by high pollen levels of urticaceae and ambrosia (ragweed). In late August, maximum alert levels were reached across much of the country, particularly in the northern half and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. In the latter, approximately 16.1% to 19.3% of the population is allergic to ambrosia. Weather conditions, including heat, wind, and thunderstorms, have been noted to facilitate pollen dispersion and increase respiratory sensitivity.
By mid-September, ragweed pollen levels remained high in eastern and central-eastern regions, such as Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, reaching a level 4 out of 5. While rainfall in the north and northeast was expected to temporarily lower concentrations, subtropical air masses and high temperatures continued to aid pollen dispersion south of the Loire. Health authorities have linked the increasing prevalence and earlier development of ragweed to climate change, noting risks such as chronic respiratory inflammation and asthma.
