Pony.ai is expanding its autonomous vehicle operations across commercial freight and passenger transport sectors. In logistics, the company is partnering with SANY to deploy 100,000 driverless, electric trucks on Chinese roads by 2030. This strategy utilizes Level 4 technology and includes a ‘1+4 model’, where a single truck with a driver leads a convoy of four autonomous trucks. The companies aim to bring the first electric and autonomous truck, featuring a 400 kW battery, to market within 2026. In the passenger sector, Pony.ai has partnered with Uber and Croatian startup Verne to launch Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia. Transitioning from initial services that included a licensed safety operator, the partnership has now launched a fully driverless service. These operations utilize Arcfox Alpha T5 crossover models equipped with seventh-generation autonomous driving technology and 360-degree sensor systems. To optimize passenger space, the front passenger seat has been replaced with a large screen. The service operates on a 22-kilometer route connecting Verne’s headquarters, the central business district, and Franjo Tuđman Airport. As of late September 2026, the Zagreb service has completed over 200,000 autonomous kilometers across several thousand passenger trips. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi visited the Verne team and the Rimac Group campus in Zagreb to support the development of these autonomous mobility solutions. While the project aims to eventually deploy over 2,000 robotaxis across Europe, regulatory hurdles remain.
