Porsche has announced the development of a high-end automotive audio system utilizing gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology. Developed in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Robust Power Semiconductor Systems and Burmester, the technology is being integrated into the Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System. A GaN-based chip will manage voltage conversion for a 400-watt subwoofer amplifier. This approach offers higher switching frequencies and lower energy losses compared to traditional silicon components. The resulting efficiency allows for a more compact design, including a heat sink that is approximately 20% lighter, and smaller passive components. This implementation marks the first application of GaN in a high-end mass-produced automotive audio system. Beyond hardware efficiency, the shift offers environmental benefits; the reduction in aluminum required for heat sinks is expected to lead to lower energy consumption and CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process. This innovation specifically aims to address the increasing weight of electric and hybrid vehicles caused by heavy battery components. While the technology is slated for production debut in Porsche vehicles in 2027, the company is also exploring further applications for GaN in high-voltage systems for electric vehicles. Porsche has filed several patent applications to protect these innovations. Recent reports confirm that the integration of GaN semiconductors into Burmester 3D High-End Surround audio systems remains a key part of Porsche’s technological push to reduce vehicle weight and improve efficiency for future electric sports models.
