Port of Ravenna arms transit transparency dispute

Activists in Ravenna organized a protest on August 27 to oppose the alleged use of the Port of Ravenna for arms trafficking destined for Israel. The demonstration, led by several local coordination groups, demanded transparency regarding weapons transit, citing the Arms Trade Treaty and domestic laws prohibiting the supply of weapons to governments responsible for war crimes.

The situation escalated into a legal and political dispute involving the Council of State. Ravenna Customs requested a suspension of a previous ruling by the Emilia-Romagna TAR that had ordered the disclosure of arms traffic data. In legal filings, the State Attorney General's Office characterized the Port of Ravenna as having ‘military relevance’ within Italy’s maritime defensive system, describing the current global context as a ‘hybrid and fragmented world war.’

Political figures, including members of the Five Star Movement, have criticized the invocation of ‘national security’ to withhold information from public oversight, questioning the military designation of a civilian port and calling for parliamentary clarification on the nature of the armaments transiting through the facility.
