The Port of Sines is undergoing discussions regarding infrastructure development and economic expansion. The environmental association ZERO has called for the new General Cargo Quay, an investment exceeding 90 million euros, to prioritize the offshore wind industrial chain to support Portugal’s energy transition. ZERO noted that while the project’s Environmental Impact Study recognizes its potential for renewables, the terminal’s future use remains insufficiently defined among various options like agro-food bulk or military applications. In a separate development, Pedro do Ó Ramos, President of the Administration of the Ports of Sines and the Algarve (APS), proposed has continued to advocate for the creation of a free trade zone to attract companies and enhance regional competitiveness. Speaking at the APLOG Logistics Congress, Ramos argued that such a measure is essential to attract logistics companies and boost import and export flows. This proposal aligns with the upcoming autonomy of the Sines Customs office, scheduled for January 2027. Ramos emphasized the port’s strategic role as a logistics hub and its competitive advantages over Spanish ports in terms of technology, sustainability, and European connectivity.
