Porto Cesareo Submerged Archaeological Park

Entities: Maurizio Landini · Messina Strait Bridge project · Stretto di Messina SpA · CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) · Corte dei Conti

Overview

In late July 2026 the coastal town of Porto Cesareo in southern Italy inaugurated its Submerged and Coastal Archaeological Park. The opening ceremony, attended by the mayor, the regional president, the prefect and cultural officials, marked the first public access to an underwater heritage site in Italy.

The park connects three millennia of history, showcasing a fortified Bronze‑Age settlement at Scalo di Furno and a Roman necropolis at Torre Chianca that lie beneath the sea. Visitors can explore the sites on foot along the shoreline or via water‑based activities, including solar‑powered boat tours, guided “archaeowalking” tours, snorkeling, canoe and stand‑up‑paddle excursions, and electric‑bike rentals. All activities operate on a reservation basis and are offered free of charge.

The project, stemming from long‑term research by the University of Salento and integrated into the regional Smart‑In Archaeology programme, aims to make previously invisible underwater heritage accessible for education and tourism, positioning Porto Cesareo as a pioneer in submerged cultural tourism in Italy.

Since the inauguration, the park continues to operate under the planned schedule, with no additional announcements or changes reported.
