In late July 2026 Portugal’s medical association launched an investigation after a 64‑year‑old patient died in an Évora emergency department, raising concerns about possible negligence and systemic flaws in the newly piloted national access system (SINACC). The Portuguese Society of Pneumology used World Lung Cancer Day to call for a low‑dose CT screening programme for high‑risk adults, citing early‑detection rates of 70‑73 % and urging mental‑health support and stigma reduction.

July data showed Portugal recorded 5,450 new lung‑cancer cases in 2022, the second‑most common cancer, with tobacco responsible for over three‑quarters of cases. Stigma around the disease fuels social isolation, delayed help‑seeking and psychological distress, reinforcing the need for screening and psychosocial services.

A broader regional picture emerged at the end of July: lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with the Belgian Cancer Registry projecting a near‑20 % rise in cases by 2035, especially among women. Portugal now reports roughly 6,000 new cases annually. Tobacco accounts for 80‑90 % of cases, but an increasing share of patients are never‑smokers exposed to occupational chemicals, air pollution, radon and other carcinogens. Health authorities stress early detection through low‑dose CT and public awareness of persistent symptoms to improve survival rates.
