Portugal migration management and integration efforts

Overview

Portugal is implementing measures to manage increasing migration flows and administrative challenges. The government has expanded temporary housing capacity for irregular migrants to 171 places across Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and Beja, surpassing European benchmarks. This expansion includes a new modular wing at the Santo António Housing Unit in Porto, which adds 80 beds and brings the unit's total to 114 places. Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves stated that this reinforcement improves the national response to challenges regarding migration management, asylum, and returns, aligning with the European Pact on Migration and Asylum.

Concurrently, officials have announced the upcoming presentation of a National Integration Plan for foreigners. The Secretary of State for the Presidency and Immigration, Rui Armindo Freitas, noted that the country faces significant administrative backlogs, including 500,000 pending processes in 2024, and deficiencies in the healthcare and housing sectors. Freitas characterized the current situation as an ‘uncontrolled immigration phenomenon’ and emphasized the need for social cohesion and improved management of asylum and returns.
