The rift between Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus has deepened, causing a significant divide among the Portuguese public. Following a 2-1 victory over Norway in a Nations League match where Ronaldo remained unused as a substitute despite warming up for approximately 25 minutes, the forward announced on social media that he was leaving the national team camp in Copenhagen. Ronaldo stated, “In due course, I will tell all the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team.” He clarified that his departure was prompted by a “complete breach of trust” regarding playing time and workload management, specifically alleging that Jesus promised him 30 minutes of play against Norway but instead left him on the bench. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) issued a 30-day suspension and a 255-euro fine following his unauthorized departure on September 30. While the player initially accepted the punishment, he later submitted a defense citing his career achievements and disciplinary record. The FPF disciplinary committee accepted these arguments, which significantly reduced the potential penalties from a possible six-month suspension and a 1,020-euro fine. Following the completion of his suspension, Ronaldo was named in Portugal's preliminary squad for upcoming November Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. However, on November 5, 2026, Ronaldo released a five-minute video announcing his retirement from international football at age 41, stating, “The day has come to hand back the shirt and the captain's armband of the national team that belongs to all of us.” Coach Jorge Jesus ~~expressed surprise at~~ addressed the ~~announcement, noting~~ retirement during a press conference, stating he ~~had intended to call Ronaldo up for upcoming fixtures.
