Overview

Portugal is managing various aspects of its residency and nationality processes. A special task force of 41 professionals has been deployed to Lisbon and Porto to address hundreds of thousands of pending cases, an intervention that has reportedly accelerated processing timelines by approximately four months.

During this period, the Ministry of Justice and the Institute of Registries and Notary reported that over 3,000 nationality applications based on residency were preliminarily denied, with a significant portion of these applicants being Brazilian nationals. These denials may be reversible.

Separately, the country continues to offer the D7 residency visa for non-EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens. This program is intended for retirees and those with regular, sustainable passive income, such as pensions or rental income. For 2026, the minimum monthly income requirement for a single adult is 920 euros, though the visa does not grant automatic work authorization.
