Portugal Guarda wildfire response

Overview

In early July 2026 Portugal intensified its fight against forest‑fire‑related illegal activity, deploying military patrols and arresting more than 130 suspects. Later that month a large wildfire erupted in the Guarda district, igniting at 13:51 on 24 July in the village of Rochoso and quickly spreading into the municipalities of Almeida, Pinhel and Sabugal. The blaze forced the closure of the A25 motorway between the Guarda junction and Alto do Leomil and of the EN16 between Amoreira (Almeida) and Pínzio (Pinhel), with drivers rerouted via the N221 and local roads.

The Sub‑regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command of Beiras and Serra da Estrela coordinated the response, deploying five aircraft, roughly 390 personnel and 118 ground vehicles; the total firefighting force on the ground exceeded 600. Five firefighters suffered minor injuries. By the evening of 28 July the fire had three active fronts near Castanheira and Rabaça (Guarda), Pínzio (Pinhel) and Cabreira (Almeida). Municipal presidents Daniela Capelo (Pinhel) and Sérgio Costa (Guarda) warned that strong winds, low humidity and rugged terrain hampered control, but no villages were under immediate threat and no evacuations were ordered. The government reiterated its policy that any fire, however small, be attacked maximally.

Simultaneously, smaller incidents such as the Ervões fire near Valpaços were being tackled by 157 operatives, 39 ground vehicles and 11 aerial units, illustrating the broad scale of Portugal’s coordinated fire‑management strategy.
