Several Portuguese educational institutions have been recognized with the Eco-Escolas Green Flag awards for their achievements in environmental education and sustainable practices. In mid-October 2026, multiple schools in Matosinhos and Anadia received distinctions. Notable recipients in Matosinhos included Alternância – Escola Profissional, Jardim-Escola João de Deus, and Escola Básica Eng.º Fernando Pinto de Oliveira, which earned awards for forest awareness and marine preservation. In Anadia, ten schools were awarded the Green Flag, including the Escola Básica e Secundária de Anadia, which received an Honorable Mention for its reforestation awareness projects. By late October 2026, the 2nd and 3rd Cycle Basic School of Vila Verde was also awarded the Green Flag by the Associação Bandeira Azul de Ambiente e Educação (ABAAE). The recognition highlighted the school’s community mobilization and environmental best practices. The ceremony also included prizes for students participating in the ‘WETLANDS – A Treasure to Conserve’ competition, aimed at preserving local biodiversity. On October 31, 2026, the Eco-Schools Green Flag 2026 ceremony was held at Air Base No. 1 in Sintra. Organized by the ABAAE and the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the event honored various institutions, including the Escola Básica e Secundária do Centro de Portugal, which received the Green Flag for the 2025/2026 school year. The Municipality of Vila de Rei was also recognized as a partner for its support in implementing environmental education programs.
