Portuguese economic growth and business outlook
Overview
Economic data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicates growth in Portugal’s service and industrial sectors during the second quarter of 2026. The service sector turnover index rose by 4.1% compared to the previous year, with significant growth in consulting, scientific, and technical activities. In the industrial sector, turnover increased by 6.5% in June, supported by a 9.0% rise in domestic market sales.
Following these indicators, a survey by the Associação Empresarial de Portugal (AEP) shows that businesses anticipate a slight economic improvement in the second half of 2026. Approximately 53.9% of surveyed companies expect an increase in domestic turnover. While international market expectations have improved moderately, AEP Chairman Luís Miguel Ribeiro advised caution, noting that businesses are facing ongoing pressures from energy costs, raw materials, and geopolitical instability.
