Emergency service organizations in Portugal are seeking increased financial support and more stable funding models from the government. The Portuguese Ambulance League (LPA) previously announced plans for a slow-moving protest in Lisbon involving approximately 100 vehicles. The group is demonstrating vehicles to demonstrate against an economic crisis in the patient transport sector, citing grievances such as sector. Grievances included payment delays from the National Health Service (SNS), state-imposed pricing, and the exclusion of patient transport from recent fuel subsidies. Following a meeting between the LPA and Health Minister Ana Paula Martins, the Portuguese Government has committed to beginning negotiations in December to revise the current price list for patient transport services. Consequently, the LPA has suspended its planned slow-march protest. In addition to the upcoming price negotiations, the Government announced that private non-urgent patient transport companies will be included in extraordinary and temporary financial support measures to mitigate rising fuel costs. The LPA characterized the meeting as having a “constructive dialogue and institutional openness,” noting that the proposed remuneration models aim to ensure economic sustainability for operators without necessarily increasing public expenditure. Concurrently, the Portuguese Firefighters League (LBP) has called for the urgent establishment of a program contract to finance volunteer firefighter humanitarian associations. LBP President António Nunes described the current funding model as “uncertain and dependent on the activity” of individual corporations. Despite a proposed state budget increase of over 5% for firefighter corporations, the League expressed concerns regarding the adequacy of the allocation and the reliability of state support delivery.
