Portuguese legal professionals petition Presidency over riot
Overview
The debate regarding the protection of fundamental rights in Portugal has intensified as legal professionals escalate their opposition to recent police actions. Following an initial open letter signed by over 200 individuals, the movement has grown significantly. More than one thousand lawyers, jurists, and law students have now sent an open letter to the Presidency of the Republic concerning the right to protest.
This petition specifically responds to actions taken by the Public Security Police (PSP) to disperse housing rights demonstrations involving tents in Lisbon and Porto. The signatories maintain that the right to manifest is a “fundamental achievement of the democratic regime” that does not require political authorization. They argue that fundamental rights must not be undermined by restrictive practices that invoke public order to compromise their effective exercise.
In a separate but related open letter, 430 lawyers called on political leaders and authorities to respect the rights to manifestation and resistance. This group specifically addressed the PSP’s dispersal of housing activists, urging law enforcement to avoid the “disproportionate use of force” and to disobey orders deemed illegitimate.
