The Caixa Geral de Aposentações (CGA) identified a “parametrization error” that caused 2,937 pensions in Portugal to be paid at higher rates than legally permitted between May and August. As a result, affected beneficiaries will face monthly reductions starting in November, with an average gross reduction of approximately 93.31 euros. The CGA is also requiring individuals to return the excess funds received during the error period. In response to the error, the Portuguese Social Security provides a formal notification process known as a ‘Nota de Reposição’. This document must specify the amount owed, the period of overpayment, the payment deadline, and the timeframe for contesting the decision. Recipients have ten business days to submit a written disagreement and provide supporting documentation. To prevent fraud, authorities advise against making payments via unofficial SMS links. If funds are not returned within the designated timeframe, Social Security may deduct the amount from future benefits, though such deductions are legally limited to a maximum of one-third of monthly payments. During a parliamentary hearing, the Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, Maria do Rosário Palma Ramalho, stated that the government did not order the cuts and was not informed of the error by the CGA. She noted that the CGA typically corrects around 800 pensions annually, suggesting the entity may have treated the situation as a routine administrative matter. Recent reports indicate the CGA is reviewing approximately 3,000 pensions following errors in calculating the pension formation rate. One affected retiree, António Monteiro, reported that his monthly pension was reduced from 1,060 euros to 1,009 euros, noting that the reduction occurred after he had retired based on official simulations provided by the CGA.
