Portuguese regional arts funding initiatives

The Direção-Geral das Artes (DGA) has launched new efforts to address regional asymmetries through the “Arte e Coesão Territorial” partnership support program. This initiative allocates €1.5 million to strengthen artistic dynamics and promote cultural democracy across various territories, featuring two project support competitions with deadlines in late October and early November.

This follows the evaluation of the inaugural ‘Arte e Periferias Urbanas’ program, a joint effort between DGArtes and the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). An evaluation by the University of Porto’s Institute of Sociology found that the previous edition successfully expanded funding access to organizations outside traditional circuits, with nine of the ten supported entities having no prior history of receiving DGArtes funding.

Despite these successes in community engagement, the evaluation noted challenges such as administrative burdens, resource disparities, and difficulties in maintaining project continuity. Recommendations for future programs include improving cultural mediation and adapting procedures to better fit local territorial contexts.
