The Socialist Party (PS) has launched several challenges against the Democratic Alliance (AD) government regarding economic and social policies. In response to the 2027 State Budget, PS Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro requested an urgent parliamentary hearing with various economic and social entities. The party aims to address the uneven impacts of rising energy costs on industrial sectors, workers, and businesses. The PS has also expressed concerns regarding the adequacy of funding for post-Recovery and Resilience Plan projects and storm damage compensation, proposing measures such as the return of ‘Zero VAT’ on essential foods and fuel tax reductions. Further criticism has been directed at specific sector allocations. PS official José Nascimento warned that proposed changes to education, healthcare, and housing could harm young people. Specifically, the party highlighted a projected 1.5% reduction in healthcare funding compared to 2026, which amounts to approximately 268 million euros, alongside concerns over rising tuition fees and rental regulations. Expanding its focus on housing, PS deputies have initiated a national listening program to evaluate public housing investments and identify regional needs. In Vila Real, deputy Rui Santos advocated for the continued replication of public housing projects to combat rising prices, noting that previous projects were funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). In Vinhais, deputies inspected social housing renovations, where local authorities reported that approximately one million euros in PRR funding has enabled the recovery of ten homes, with further interventions nearing completion to improve thermal comfort.
