Post-communist political legacies in Central Europe

Discussions regarding the political legacy of communism in Central Europe have focused on the tension between legal continuity and transitional justice. Early analyses highlighted how the failure to punish totalitarian-era officials in countries like Slovakia allowed certain foundations of the old system to persist within modern political structures. In the Czech Republic, this continuity was evidenced by the long-term presence of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia in local government, such as in Moravská Pustiměř, where it held municipal seats for 36 consecutive years.

While many high-ranking post-1989 officials in the Czech Republic were former members of communist organizations, the regional approach to these legacies has shifted. Historically, liberal intellectuals in Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia advocated for moderation to avoid ‘witch hunts’ and maintain democratic stability. More recently, however, political leaders in Poland and Hungary have adopted more aggressive stances toward dismantling non-liberal structures, with leaders using rhetoric comparable to post-war tribunals or organized crime trials to pursue political accountability.
