Following its acquisition from Pepco Group for a symbolic £1 in July 2025, US-based investment firm Gordon Brothers is reportedly exploring a potential sale of the UK discount retailer Poundland. Since the takeover, Poundland has undergone significant restructuring to address financial difficulties, including a pre-tax loss of £79 million for the fiscal year ending September 2024. This process involved reducing the workforce from 16,000 to 12,000 employees and downsizing the store estate from over 800 to approximately 600 locations. To drive a turnaround, the retailer has focused on a “back-to-basics retailing” strategy, which included simplifying its pricing structure to a £1, £2, and £3 model for groceries, clothing, and general merchandise. As of early 2026, roughly 60% of its stock was priced at the £1 mark. Gordon Brothers has formally initiated a sale process overseen by Alvarez & Marsal, with the goal of completing the transaction within weeks to ensure finalization before the festive trading period. A successful deal could merge Poundland’s approximately 600 stores with Poundstretcher’s nearly 300 locations, creating a major UK discount retail group with roughly 900 stores and TG Jones—which recently acquired the Polish chain Dealz.
