In Argentina, poultry consumption has surpassed beef for the first time, reaching 47 kg per inhabitant between August 2025 and July 2026. This dietary shift is attributed to economic pressures, as the rising cost of beef has led households to substitute it with more affordable proteins like chicken and pork. The egg industry in Argentina is also seeing significant growth, with the Cámara Argentina de Productores e Industrializadores Avícolas (CAPIA) projecting egg consumption to reach 430 to 440 units per capita by 2026. Recent reports indicate a deepening crisis for beef retailers in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), where sales volumes have dropped by 40% compared to the previous year. Due to diminished purchasing power and rising fixed costs, butchers are freezing retail prices and absorbing losses to avoid closure. To adapt to these changing habits, traditional shops are restructuring displays to include more pork and poultry products. In the broader industry, CAPIA anticipates that global turnover for laying poultry will exceed US$ 2.2 billion this year, supported by a production fleet expected to reach 67 million birds. Parallel developments are occurring in Cuba, where the Empresa Avícola de Pinar del Río (Pican) is attempting to revitalize egg production. To overcome previous shortages of animal feed and inputs, the company has implemented 176 transformations, including leasing farms to private producers and commercializing byproducts. byproducts like poultry manure. Pican has also tripled employee salaries to improve productivity.
