Power to the People Festival in Maryland
Overview
The inaugural ‘Power to the People’ festival, curated by guitarist Tom Morello, was held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. Designed as a protest festival to promote peace, justice, solidarity, and voter turnout, a portion of ticket proceeds benefited organizations VoteRiders and HeadCount.
The event featured a diverse lineup including Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews, Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, and Jack Black. Notable performances included a Black Sabbath tribute led by Jack Black and Geezer Butler, as well as a collaborative rendition of ‘Walk This Way’ featuring Morello, Chuck D, and Scott Ian. Headliner Bruce Springsteen delivered a politically charged set, performing ‘Streets of Minneapolis’ regarding deaths involving federal immigration agents. Other highlights included a duet between Springsteen and Joan Baez on Bob Dylan’s ‘Chimes of Freedom,’ and a collaborative performance of ‘Fortunate Son’ involving Springsteen, Morello, Dave Matthews, and Nathaniel Rateliff.
The festival grounds included a ‘Freedom Village’ for engagement with nonprofits such as the ACLU, Farm Aid, and Oxfam. Former special counsel Jack Smith was observed in attendance wearing a Bruce Springsteen ‘No Kings’ shirt.
In a subsequent interview with Rolling Stone, Morello addressed the festival’s political themes and his own voting habits. He stated that while he participates in elections, he did not vote for Kamala Harris, citing a ‘righteous fury’ regarding a corporate-controlled electoral system. He noted difficulty supporting candidates perceived as responsible for international conflicts, such as those in Gaza, and remarked that he cannot recall the last time he voted for a Democratic presidential candidate.
