PRASA transport infrastructure and fleet modernization
Overview
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has initiated significant infrastructure and fleet modernization programs to enhance public transport services.
Initially, the agency announced an R11 billion investment to upgrade signalling and telecommunications systems. This includes R2 billion specifically for the rehabilitation of the Umlazi Corridor in KwaZulu-Natal to improve train frequency and passenger capacity. To support these upgrades, PRASA procured 101 new trains.
Following these developments, PRASA expanded its focus to include broader safety and fleet renewal initiatives. As passenger rail trips rose from 77 million to 101 million, the agency implemented drone-based surveillance and electronic security to address theft, vandalism, and overcrowding. Additionally, the agency began renewing its long-distance bus fleet, introducing 17 new coaches to the City-to-City division as part of a larger goal to acquire 95 modern coaches by 2030.
