Pre-Hispanic solar observatory discovery in Puebla
Overview
The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) has confirmed the discovery of a pre-Hispanic solar observatory in Teteles de Ávila Castillo, located in the Sierra Norte of Puebla, Mexico. Dating back approximately 2,500 years to the Middle Preclassic period, the site—known as Tetelihtic or Group E—is the first confirmed astronomical complex of its kind found outside of the Maya region.
The site consists of a quadrangular courtyard with two platforms designed to track the solar cycle for agricultural purposes, such as marking the harvest season. Archaeological analysis indicates that the layout and alignment of these pyramid-like structures share significant similarities with Group E complexes found in Uaxactún, Guatemala.
Researchers, including Alberto Diez Barroso Repizo, suggest these findings offer new insights into the shared astronomical knowledge and cultural relationships between diverse Mesoamerican groups, including the Maya, Huastec, and Totonac peoples.
