Precious metals market trends and characteristics

Overview

Precious metals serve distinct economic roles, with gold acting as a defensive asset for capital protection and hedging, silver functioning as both an investment and an industrial commodity, and platinum maintaining strong ties to industrial use.

Market trends have recently shown divergence among these metals. Gold demand remains resilient, supported by ETF inflows due to fiscal sustainability concerns and continuous purchasing by the People’s Bank of China. In the mining sector, Aya Gold & Silver reported a Preliminary Economic Assessment for its Boumadine project with a projected NPV5% of $3.5 billion, exceeding market consensus.

In contrast, platinum has faced significant downward pressure. Following a period of rapid growth where prices approached the 3,000 USD mark, platinum has declined to approximately 1,699 USD per ounce, representing a roughly 42% drop from the January record of 2,923.70 USD. This decline is driven by a major shift in market fundamentals. The World Platinum Investment Council has revised its 2026 outlook from a projected deficit of 297,000 ounces to a surplus of 265,000 ounces, marking a swing of over 560,000 ounces in three months.

This projected surplus is primarily driven by an expected 18% drop in demand. Key contributing factors include a reversal in investment demand, moving from an inflow in 2025 to an expected outflow of 83,000 ounces in 2026. Additionally, jewelry demand is forecasted to fall by 15%, with China experiencing a 32% year-on-year decline in the second quarter. Automotive demand is also expected to decrease by 4% as the rollout of electric vehicles proceeds more slowly than anticipated.
