Pregnancy complications and maternal health risks

Overview

Recent medical studies have identified links between various pregnancy complications and long-term health risks for women.

A UK-based study published in BMJ Medicine, analyzing data from over 1.4 million women, found that complications such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and postnatal depression are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease later in life. Other factors, including preterm birth, miscarriage, and placental abruption, were also linked to these conditions.

In Canada, research presented at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week 2026 suggests that living kidney donors may face a modest increase in the risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, such as preeclampsia. While most donor pregnancies remain uncomplicated, researchers noted that findings regarding gestational hypertension may assist transplant teams in providing more precise counseling for potential donors.
