Slovakia has initiated the second stage of the Prešov northern bypass on the R4 expressway. The project, which involves constructing a 10.2-km section over 37 months, is funded by €103.5 million from the European Regional Development Fund and €18.3 million from the state budget. The R4 is intended to serve as an international transit corridor linking the Hungarian border to the Polish border. Due to its location along priority military corridors, the infrastructure must meet dual-use requirements to support military personnel, heavy equipment, and humanitarian aid. The National Highway Company (NDS) is managing the construction, which aims to further reduce transit traffic through Prešov. Previous infrastructure developments, such as the D1 section completed in 2021, have already significantly decreased heavy vehicle traffic on urban roads. As of August 2026, the second stage of the Prešov northern bypass is progressing as part of ongoing efforts to divert transit traffic from the city center.
