The Jammu and Kashmir government has identified a 650-year-old Chinar tree in Chattergam, Budgam district, as being among the oldest of its species in Asia. While the tree remains green, authorities noted that some old and dried branches have fallen naturally over time.

As part of broader preservation efforts, the administration has implemented geo-tagging and digital monitoring for tens of thousands of trees. Local residents have expressed interest in transforming the site into a heritage tourism destination, calling for improved infrastructure, scientific conservation, and landscaping. Current regulations strictly prohibit unauthorized branch cutting, carving bark, or attaching signboards to these trees.
