Press freedom concerns in Costa Rica

Overview

Eight former presidents of Costa Rica met with representatives from the Inter American Press Association and the Committee to Protect Journalists to address the country’s state of freedom of expression.

In a joint statement, the former leaders expressed concern over signs of deterioration in press freedom. They specifically cited administrative measures designed to “financially stifle media outlets,” restrictions on public information access, and the “unjustified use of ‘state secrets’.”

Additionally, the former heads of state highlighted the stigmatization of media organizations and digital harassment targeting communicators critical of the government. They called upon authorities and civil society to ensure transparency and support the mission of international press protection organizations.
