Tensions regarding press freedom in Argentina have escalated following legal actions against journalists and criticism from international organizations. In Formosa, a court sentenced four LN+ journalists to fines or arrest for conducting documentary coverage without prior authorization. This ruling caused internal friction within the ruling La Libertad Avanza party, as President Javier Milei defended the decision by labeling the journalists ‘filthy trash with microphones’, while Senator Patricia Bullrich condemned the ruling and stated that ‘press freedom must be respected’. International scrutiny has also intensified. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) organized protests in Paris to denounce what they characterize as the ‘systematic harassment’ of the press by President Milei. RSF reported that during a 47-day period in early 2026, the President averaged ‘more than 35 hate messages daily’ directed toward the media. In response to the ongoing verbal attacks, media figure Mario Pergolini has proposed a collective media boycott. During his program ‘Otro Día Perdido’, Pergolini suggested that outlets—including TN, C5N, El Destape, and Vorterix—should cease covering the President’s activities until the insults toward the press stop, arguing that public condemnation has failed to modify his behavior. Journalist Dante López Foresi expressed support for this stance, suggesting that media coverage should be restricted to matters of strict public interest and the verification of presidential claims rather than amplifying personal aggressions.
