Legal and social concerns have emerged regarding the use of WhatsApp groups for school-related communication. Experts warn that these digital spaces are subject to strict privacy and data protection laws. Sharing images, videos, or academic information of minors without explicit parental consent can lead to legal consequences, including financial fines or potential prison sentences.

Beyond legal risks, the use of these groups has led to calls for better etiquette and clearer boundaries. While they facilitate essential communication about schedules and events, they often cause frustration due to excessive chatter and late-night notifications. Recommendations for maintaining order include setting ground rules, keeping discussions focused on useful information, and moving personal rants to private messages.

Recent warnings from privacy experts highlight specific data risks, noting that these platforms often lead to the sharing of sensitive information such as children’s phone numbers, home addresses, personal identification codes, and health data. Donatas Drakickas, a product manager at Tele2, advises that users should only share information they would be comfortable sharing in person with all group members, noting that information can be easily saved, screenshotted, or forwarded even in closed groups.

Additionally, psychologist Ieva Plauškutė from Jaunimo linija warns that long-standing groups can create a “false sense of security.” As members become more familiar with one another, they may share more personal thoughts and plans, forgetting that digital information is difficult to control once it has been transmitted.
