Private higher education expansion in Mozambique

Overview

The private higher education sector in Mozambique is undergoing rapid expansion, moving beyond the capital, Maputo, to meet rising demand. This growth is driven by secondary school graduates seeking proximity to home to avoid relocation costs, as well as professionals requiring flexible evening schedules to balance employment with studies.

According to José Leopoldo Nhampossa, director-general of the Instituto Superior de Transportes e Comunicações (ISUTC), the expansion is also fueled by a labor market seeking specialized skills in fields such as engineering, transport, communications, and management. This growth is further necessitated by the saturation of available places within the public education system.

While the sector is being shaped by diverse investors—including entrepreneurs, corporations, foundations, and religious organizations—the expansion brings new challenges. These include concerns regarding educational quality, business sustainability, and the perceived value of private degrees within the labor market, especially given the high recurring costs and slow returns on investment required to operate these institutions.
