Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) announced plans to invest 1,658 million pesos to construct a large-scale military museum and a National Center for Military History in the first section of Chapultepec Forest, Mexico City. The proposed project would cover approximately 55,624 square meters, an area designated as an Environmental Value Area, and is expected to take 36 months to complete. The facility is intended to house exhibition halls for the Army, Air Force, and National Guard, alongside an auditorium, cafeteria, and parking facilities. Following the announcement, América Rangel, a deputy for the National Action Party (PAN) in the Mexico City Congress, called on city officials and the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema) to deny the necessary permits. Rangel argued that the site must be protected due to its status as an Environmental Value Area. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed that the city government is analyzing the request from Sedena, noting that construction cannot take place in the designated area because of its environmental status. Legislative debate continues as Morena representatives maintain that the city government is reviewing the request through the Secretariat of the Environment (Sedema), reiterating that construction is prohibited in such protected zones. Due to significant opposition from environmental activists, neighbors, and local authorities, Sedena has announced it will relocate the planned construction. Critics and the Miguel Hidalgo borough government raised concerns regarding urban impact, increased traffic, and the loss of environmental value. Sedena stated it intends to move the project to a different military field that already possesses existing buildings and infrastructure to ensure no new green areas or ecosystems are affected. The new museum aims to preserve and display over 200 years of military history, including documents, uniforms, aircraft, and weaponry, but the final location has not yet been determined.
