Proton faces backlash over AI integration and security concerns
Swiss privacy-focused technology company Proton is facing intense scrutiny following an investigation by 404 Media regarding its internal culture and shift toward artificial intelligence. Reports based on employee testimonies, Slack messages, and meeting recordings allege that CEO Andy Yen has pressured staff to prioritize speed and AI usage over traditional security protocols.
Internal communications suggest that Yen dismissed requests for thorough penetration testing of new code as “loser thinking,” asserting that speed and security are not mutually exclusive. According to CTO Bart Butler, AI-generated code accounted for 90% of the company’s output in October. The investigation also claims the company implemented software to track the volume of AI code produced by employees.
In response to the controversy, Proton issued an official apology on X, stating the company had not met expectations. The company denied installing employee-tracking software, attributing the misunderstanding to the use of Mobile Device Management (MDM) tools. Proton has also committed to making its internal AI rules open source and releasing new versions of its AI assistant, Lumo.
