He specifically targeted PS leader José Luís Carneiro for questioning official immigration statistics, labeling the move a sign of “total unpreparedness.” Carneiro responded by dismissing Soares’ remarks as “levian” and citing the PSD leader’s lack of executive experience. Alongside MEP Francisco Assis, Carneiro argued there is a “profound difference” between the PS and Chega, asserting that while the PS serves as a credible political alternative, Chega seeks to oppose the regime itself. This exchange underscores intensifying friction regarding immigration, social security, and political stability.
