PsychAD human prefrontal cortex atlas release
Overview
An international scientific consortium under the PsychAD program has released a high-resolution single-cell atlas of the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Utilizing data from over 6.3 million cell nuclei across nearly 1,500 donors, the research maps the molecular and cellular architecture of the brain.
The findings, published in Nature-group journals, include data from individuals with various conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Lewy body disease, vascular dementia, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The research identifies both shared and disease-specific molecular pathways, which is expected to assist in identifying precise biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
Additionally, the studies provide insights into brain maturation, suggesting the prefrontal cortex reaches maturity around age 24. The research describes three phases of brain life: intense remodeling during early development, stability during adulthood, and a molecular resurgence in old age characterized by more prominent support cells like astrocytes and microglia.
