In mid-October 2026, various regional health organizations in Spain and Portugal launched initiatives to promote cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). In Spain and Portugal, training sessions were held to mark European Cardiac Arrest Awareness Day. These included practical workshops at the University of Valladolid in Soria, a ‘Cardiomarathon’ in Huelva involving 1,200 young people, and a cross-border collaboration between Galicia and northern Portugal in Chaves that trained 150 students. In the Valencian Community, emergency services highlighted the scale of cardiac arrest interventions, noting that SAMU medical teams have reanimated 1,841 patients so far this year. Concurrently, in the Basque Country, health officials noted that while approximately 600 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually, fewer than 45% of witnesses begin resuscitation before paramedics arrive. Medical experts have urged the public to act immediately, noting that emergency operators can provide real-time guidance during such incidents. Expanding on these efforts, the Valencian Community Health Emergency Service (SESCV) has introduced a specialized course for teaching staff. This program utilizes active learning and real-case simulations with adult and infant mannequins to prepare educators for medical emergencies within school environments.
