In mid-September 2026, the municipal government of Duque de Caxias announced an expansion of its armed security division, the Força Municipal. The initiative aimed to deploy 600 agents across neighborhoods such as Saracuruna and Campos Elíseos, integrating municipal guards with Military, Civil, and Federal Highway Police. Mayor Netinho Reis indicated that investments in weaponry, including Sig Sauer rifles and pistols, were intended to bolster public security and stimulate economic growth. Later in the month, a violent homicide occurred in the Pantanal neighborhood involving a 24-year-old firefighter Pedro Ernesto dos Anjos Rodrigues and a his 26-year-old boyfriend, medical student. The victims reportedly attempted to evade pursuers while student Pedro Henrique Araújo. Family members stated the couple realized they were being followed before while returning from a relative’s home. Security camera footage captured the victims being intercepted. Their intercepted, after which their bodies were discovered in a wooded area near the Sossego and Cacareco communities. Investigators recovered the firefighter’s service pistol, containing 15 rounds, from under the seat of the victims’ car. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro are investigating the incident. By late September, the city expanded its security measures by extending Municipal Force patrols to more than 30 locations, covering over 85% of the municipality, including neighborhoods such as Nova Campinas, Parque Paulista, and Parque Eldorado. Additionally, the city is implementing a technological surveillance belt in the Vila São Luís/Sarapuí region. This project involves 30 security towers equipped with 180 cameras utilizing artificial intelligence for facial recognition and license plate reading. The system will integrate with the Smart Duque Monitoring Center to identify individuals with outstanding warrants or stolen vehicles.
