Overview

In late July 2026 Colorado’s public lands were hit by federal budget cuts that slashed U.S. Forest Service staff. The reductions eliminated positions that maintain trails, campgrounds and roads and that respond to emergencies, prompting a transfer of management of the heavily visited Maroon Bells area to Pitkin County and raising concerns about wildfire response and visitor safety.

A week later, in early August 2026, Canadian public‑service unions staged a rally in Ottawa to protest staffing cuts at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Natural Resources Canada. The cuts removed hundreds of employees, threatening flood forecasting, satellite‑based emergency mapping, wildfire smoke and air‑quality monitoring, and forest‑threat assessments as the country faced a record‑breaking wildfire season.
