The state government of Quintana Roo has expanded public transportation services in Chetumal through new transit initiatives. In early August, the government launched the Ruta Calderitas bus line under the ‘Tu Ruta Chetumal’ program. Managed by the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO), the service was introduced to improve mobility for the coastal community, connecting 44 neighborhoods and various schools and hospitals. By late August, Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa inaugurated the Sian Ka’an–Las Américas route, marking the commencement of the Quintana Roo Wellbeing Mobility System (MOBI). This phase introduced five Mexican-made TARUK electric buses equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi and real-time video surveillance. The MOBI system includes a social fare structure using electronic cards, providing free travel for people with disabilities and subsidized rates for students and senior citizens. The infrastructure is designed to eventually accommodate up to 66 electric buses across 10 routes in the capital. Following a testing period that began in June, the MOBI system is now officially operational. The electric bus service is the result of an electromobility alliance between the Ministry of Science, Humanities, Technologies and Innovation (Secihti) and private companies Dina, which provides the chassis, and MegaFlux, which provides the batteries. Each vehicle has a capacity for 60 passengers and a range of 340 kilometers per charge. While the standard fare is approximately one dollar, students and senior citizens are eligible for a 50% subsidy.
