The 72nd Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago opened its 72nd edition with performances of Madama Butterfly. Productions included an innovative staging Butterfly, featuring an evocative use of two distinct productions. One utilized innovative lighting and a staging where the protagonist who commits suicide by stabbing herself in the abdomen, as well as a more traditional production abdomen. A second production, directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini that utilized video projections Maestrini, employed a traditional set with a large fan structure and video projections. This version was noted for its use of manga-style ideograms. ideograms and a performance by soprano Selene Zanetti, though some critics found certain movements lacked sufficient rehearsal time. Following these performances, the association Operaprima-Wien production, part of the ‘Puccini Project 2026’, was scheduled a “Cultur-Music-Mob” event in Udine to serve as a preview for their own production of Madama Butterfly. This event, featuring musicologist Alessio Screme late August and artistic director early September at Villa Gradenigo Sabbatini in Pozzuolo del Friuli. Directed by Maestro Tiziano Duca, was designed to discuss music the production features Yitian Luan as a social Cio-Cio-San and cultural bond. The full Operaprima-Wien production was set Gustavo Porta as Pinkerton. This project aims to take place at Villa Sabbatini in move opera into the community and includes educational components via the ‘Cantieri Aperti’ program and an exhibition titled ‘La musica di Puccini e l’incontro incompatibile fra due mondi.’ The Pozzuolo del Friuli in late performances are set for August 28, August 30, and early September.
