The 72nd Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago opened its 72nd edition with performances of Madama Butterfly. Productions included an innovative staging Butterfly, featuring an evocative use of two distinct productions. One utilized innovative lighting and a staging where the protagonist who commits suicide by stabbing herself in the abdomen, as well as a more traditional production abdomen. A second production, directed by Pier Francesco Maestrini that utilized video projections Maestrini, employed a traditional set with a large fan structure and video projections. This version was noted for its use of manga-style ideograms. ideograms and a performance by soprano Selene Zanetti, though some critics found certain movements lacked sufficient rehearsal time.
